on Hiawatha Day School

Just pulled my 2 children out of Hiawatha Day School after 5 days the director rudely responded to an email of mine asking her to remind the two teachers in their room to put sunscreen on my kids since they hadnt all week when they went outside to play. There are NO PHONES in the indivdual daycare rooms!! (You have to go through the director to have her go physically walk to the room and then peak in and give her impression...not the primary teachers.) I emailed the director instead of calling her main line because I knew she wasnt in the building yet. I thought it would be simplier to email vs calling her about a simple request of sunscreen. She responed to my email that I was being to critcal of her staff regarding sunscreen and that we should look for a better fit for our family. (we had already figured this out on day 1 and secured a spot for the next week somewhere else). The director instructed me in the email to apply sunscreen in the morning before we brought the girls in. We were paying and couple thousand dollars extra for this place thinking it was better and newer.. we were wrong. We were happy with our old daycare and the only reason we switched was there were 12 kids in this room vs at our old daycare of 24. Another mom that dropped off her child day in our room was truely disappointed with the director lack of orientation for new family. This family showed up at the center, waitied for director to show up at 830, were not given a code to get in the building, didnt even know what room to walk their child to so they had to wait for the director to finally show up. There was no open house to meet the teacher, no policy manual when we started, we werent told we had to bring sippy cups for our girls to drink throughout the day b/c they dont have cups in the room. We were never told that they do not have breakfast there. When I was in the room helping my kids adjust the first day I asked about water with the snack or cups since they were giving them dry ceral on a napkin. The assistant teacher said we need to bring our own. I asked if they had any in the room. She replied, "we have little cups." I said like dixie cups, she said yes. Then there was a little boy at the same table that asked me for water. I asked the assitant if she could get him some water, she seemed annoyed and did not answer, looked up in cabinet didnt see any cups and then continued to stand there and ignore myself, my kids and that little unknown boy. I also saw the assistant refuse to hug a girl after she asked for a hug after she hurt her arm on a toy. Oh the first day I got a post-it note as the daily gram! No formalized sheet of paper stating how long they napped or approx how much they ate. Oh this was the only other thing I asked about the second day besides sunscreen that ignited a rude email from the director regarding my "criticalness" of her daycare. SERIOUSLY!! Back to the sunscreen story. The first day I was there for an hour and they were all heading outside and I then put sunscreen on my girls. Another kid wanted sunscreen I looked at the assitant b/c she was closest to me. I said do any of the kids get sunscreen on; she said if the parents bring it in. I told her there is a bunch of sunscreen on the shelf so I assume those parents brought for them to wear it. I will quickly mention on other thing. My kids were so thristy after getting home they would drink 3 sippy cups of water or milk after school then another 2 sippy cups before bed. They woke up with dry pull up on in the middle of the night. I knew we were leaving so I decided on the 5th day that was enough after I secured another daycare for our family. Ask lots of specific questions if you go tour this place. The older rooms Pre K and room before that the teachers look great but any younger be cautious.

Child Care Information
Most child care centers are operated in high regards to the regulations put forth my local city, county, and state rules. However some facilities have been found negligent in the past. When evaluating a child care center ask quesions about the age of infants and children accepted, drop in childcare policies, and what childcare solutions are available in your price range. Childcare forms often ask questions about vouchers, tax credits and household income to determine what the rates and overall costs to you are. Childcare workers are ofen certified and highly qualified and licensed to provide assistance to any situation you might need.
